What is guarantee abuse?
Guarantee abuse is using satisfaction, lifetime or performance guarantees to cycle through products without really paying for them. A customer wears out an item, claims a replacement, and repeats.
Guarantees are a strong selling point, which is why brands keep them. The goal is to stop the few who use them as a subscription.
Who it hits
Outdoor gear, luggage, mattresses, cookware, supplements and any brand with a generous guarantee.
What it costs
The replacement or refund on every claim, plus shipping and handling, on products the customer has already used.
How to prevent it
Require proof of purchase and link claims to the original order.
Track claims per person across accounts.
Set limits on how many guarantee claims one customer can make.
FAQ
Should I drop my guarantee?
Usually not. It drives sales. Keep it and target the small group abusing it.
What counts as abuse?
Repeated claims on items used well past their normal life, or claims on items the claimant didn’t buy.
